By mid-April of this year, the snow was starting to melt exposing muddy trails and tracks. But there was still snow and ice in many places, and this butterfly didn't mind perching on the ice. This species overwinters as an adult and so on any warm day in early spring, even with snow still on the ground, they will emerge and fly around. They derive minerals from mud and from animal scat.
