Leafcutter bee (Megachilidae) on aster

Reveler Conservation Area

The leafcutters are intriguing creatures. Unlike most bees, they carry pollen on their stomach, not on their legs. They create tube-shaped nests carefully constructed of many pieces of round leaves so carefully cut from shrubs, often those in the Rosaceae family. To see their nests http://www.pbase.com/laroseforest/image/156439236 and http://www.pbase.com/laroseforest/image/153988804
