Moth caterpillar (Hypena opulenta)

A species from the Ukraine, introduced in the last few years into certain locations in Canada to control the hyper aggressive plant, Vincetoxicum rossicum. It has taken years of work to get to the point of releasing these insects into a controlled situation and eventually into the areas of Vincetoxicum. They are eating the plant like mad, but it will take thousands upon thousands of them many years (decades) to gain any sort of control, I would think.

Spotty! I hope Canada has good protocols for assessing biological control agents before they're released as these agents can go horribly wrong.

Sharp catch,.. It's amazing what they can do, at least they are happy eating these plants even it it takes a long time. V

Lovely capture of the pose. Good to know that the scientists are getting on top of the problem. V

Interesting position for the caterpillar, and a great closeup of it. Hope they eventually get control of that plant. But then what? V.

Nice capture. Interesting and scary thinking how an alien species will affect an ecosystem.
