Waiting for lunch: Turkey vulture

Central Experimental Farm

Two turkey vultures were taking turns eating a dead groundhog. This one flew to a nearby picnic table while the other had a go. Many people find these birds ugly, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder! They are nature's garbagemen, cleaning up the dead animals of which there are so many, especially on roads. These birds don't hunt for food, they are strictly carrion feeders.

Yes... looking for lunch, no doubt! Just today someone in my local photo club posted a photo of an albino turkey vulture. I had never seen one before. It was quite amazing! You caught a nice image of this guy. They usually don't hang around long unless they are chowing down!

I often gross people out by telling them I want to come back as a turkey vulture, my favorite bird in the world! I can honestly say that I have never seen one at a picnic table before! Very apropos for a bird looking for lunch!

I agree Christine. They certainly are very beneficial and in my opinion also beautifully ugly and can soar with the best. Good closeup image of it.

Nice photo, I like the setting on the picnic table and vultures are nice looking birds that are an important part of our environment. V

well, someone has to carry out the dirty work...vultures seem like truly hardy Canadians, despite the various ilks and diets...their role is key to the environment..

A most interesting looking bird, and you have captured it with good detail and color. V.

Oh my, a summer time picnic. I agree that they are as interesting as any other bird. Neat that you got so close to one.
