Elm sphinx caterpillar (Ceratomia amyntor), #7786

Reveler Conservation Area

Went back to the conservation area to see if I could find this caterpillar again as I wanted a few more and better shots, specifically, shots to show off those double "horns" at the front (the front is on the right!). Just about all sphinx caterpillars have a horn at the rear end (on the left), but the double ones at the front are quite unusual. This caterpillar is small, but if it survives it will eventually reach a whopping 9cm in size.

I'd never have guessed that front was to the right! A very interesting caterpillar with that reverse-barbed horn on its rear end.
