Brown-spotted zale caterpillar (Zale helata), #8704

Warwick Forest

Found on a white pine. I have searched hundreds of white pines hoping to see this caterpillar and... finally. It is perfect example of camouflage... note how the brown stripes on the body mimic the brown on the pine, while the green stripes look like pine needles. The white stripes break up the green adding to the impression of slender green pine needles.

Cool find. Congrats. I would assume that they can be all that tasty based on their food source.

a marked adaptation that could well have led to long term survival...quite the nuzzling needle all the same..
