This is a large (about 2 inches) fuzzy caterpillar. It was feeding on a small Prunus shrub with an Argid sawfly nearby. The orange band on the head appears when the caterpillar is disturbed. To see the very pretty adult it becomes: http://www.pbase.com/laroseforest/image/108714595
