Saddled prominent caterpillar (Heterocampa guttivitta), #7994

Larose Forest

This caterpillar was found on an elm leaf, slowly munching its way along the leaf rib. It is a very variable caterpillar, depending on which instar it is. In the early stages it is red with long spikes. As a mature caterpillar, it has a red pattern on its back, hence its name of saddled prominent. This is not yet the final instar, possibly 4th or 5th?

You must really have trained your eyes to spot these!

Such interesting marking on the head and body! Lovely composition with the diagonal divide between leaf and caterpillar and that great bokeh. V.
