American goldfinch

Photographed in my garden. The goldfinches are now in breeding plumage and flocking in small groups. They won't be nesting for a long time yet, timing their nesting to the growth of thistles, as they feed on the seeds and use thistledown for nests.

Our male goldfinches are also beginning to show signs of their breeding plumage finery! :) Didn't realize they use thistle down to line their nests.
Wonderful capture of this male Christine! V
