Forked fungus beetle (Bolitotherus cornutus), male

I've been looking for a male forked fungus beetle to photograph for some time. I have found a few, but they were ensconced inside a polypore and I didn't want to dig them out. This one was more cooperative, and came out of the Ganoderma polypore onto my hand. The males are considerably smaller than the females and have the distinctive 'horns'. I only occasionally see them sitting on the polypores, but no surprise, as they are largely nocturnal insects.

Well-named. What an ugly beast. How do you find all these weird creatures?

Nice find and image Christine. I first thought you were holding a piece of mud, but I should have suspected another interesting little creature.

What perfect camouflage - except when he's sitting on your hand! A(nother) remarkable creature.

He kind of looks like a piece of soil. Interesting shape and texture. V.
