Golden tortoise beetle (Charidotella sexpunctata)

Larose Forest. Although this beetle is sitting on a goldenrod stem, it is usually found on plants in the morning glory family. Alongside this particular trail in the forest, there were a few morning glory plants, and at least 15 mottled tortoise beetles were found, and one of this species. It is typically a very metallic golden colour, but when disturbed, turns red.

An attractive macro image. That opaque outer carapace is unusual.

I wonder if it turns red to warn predators it may be poisonous! At any rate it makes for lovely photograph! V

Very cool find, Christine. I had no idea these turn red when disturbed. (I surely will pester them a bit the next time I see one.)
