Mourning cloak (Nymphalis antiopa)

This beautiful visitor was around my garden for about a hour, mostly landing on the apple tree or the bamboo poles. These butterflies overwinter as adults in crevices or under the bark of trees, anywhere that offers warmth and shelter. Amazing to think such a delicate creature can withstand winter temperatures of -30c.

Wings are tattered and faded, poor thing. I'm sure she must be enjoying the warm sun right now.
