Hover fly (Ocyptamus fascipennis), a mimic of Ichneumonid wasps

I am always fascinated by insects that mimic other species, and I think this one does a good job of pretending to be an ichneumonid wasp. The larvae of these flies feed on scale insects. This fly is nectaring on ragweed flowers.

I think mimicry is fascinating too. What a highly evolved protective development. Great detail on the fly. V.
