Eyed elator (Alaus oculatus), a click beetle

These large click beetles are quite amazing. I have only ever seen this one, sadly, but I keep looking. They are not rare, just difficult to find. They are about 35-45 mm in length. According to Bug Guide, the adults perhaps nectar on flowers or sip plant juice, but the larvae eat grubs of wood-boring beetles.

Beautiful capture. We get them in the house here, but I'm not sure they are this variety. Ours are just brown.

They would be a useful addition for us - they could come and eat the long-horn grubs that do the damage here!
