Eyed click beetle (Alaus oculatus)

Hillsdale Park, Rockcliffe Park

According to Bug Guide, the larvae of these large (up to 45mm) beetles "feed on grubs of wood-boring beetles". I forgot to add that, as others rightly guessed, those are fake eyes meant to fool predators!
