Eastern red-back salamander (Plethodon cinereus)

We found about 6 or 7 of these guys today, all underneath boards, bits of hard plastic, logs... They are fascinating creatures with an interesting biology. They do need to keep moist at all times, so picking them up is not a good idea.

He's very long. Nice capture of him in his natural environment. I like the shine from his wetness and yes, I think I'd pass on picking him up. V.

So different from our local salamanders with their yellow stripes. Good to see them around.

Very neat. We saw these guys up in the Berkshires last weekend. The grandkids got a big kick out of them. Nice shot.

I used to see these all the time when I was a kid. Recently I went to the same woods where I used to see them and I could not find even one. Very sad. I am happy that you can still see them.
