Late summer is the time to see lots of these large, handsome long-horned beetles. The larvae tunnel into black locust trees, the adults feed on nectar. We have plenty of black locust trees around the Fletcher Wildlife Garden, and they are considered an invasive species up this way, even though a native tree further south in the province. So, though the larvae of this insect may do some damage to the trees, it is not enough to make us worry. And in fact, over 20 years of seeing these insects at the garden, the population of black locust trees has grown, not diminished! Goldenrods are THE place to look for this species of beetle.
