Sphecid wasp (Eremnophila aureonotata)

A small sphecid wasp found at the Fletcher Wildife Garden. This one is nectaring on milkweeds. According to Bug Guide (who kindly confirmed my ID), the larvae feed on caterpillars of Noctuidae moths. Adults stock their nest with these caterpillars for their young.

They don't look nearly so scary when you photograph them. Love its graceful shape and the beautiful flowers. V.
