Hover fly (Toxomerus marginatus), female

This tiny (5-6mm) hover fly is very common and can be found frequently in gardens as well as along trails, where I photographed this one. The larvae of the Toxomerus hover flies are predators of aphids and other insects gardeners are not happy about! They are therefore a fly to encourage in your garden.

He looks as if he is wearing an old fashioned leather helmet as the biplane pilots did. What a cool guy.
