Garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis)

Actually there are 5 here, which is about one fifth of all the snakes that came out of the hibernaculum, in this case, a chipmunk hole. The snakes would have entered this burrow in late fall and spent the winter there. The very warm weather of recent days has clearly brought them out in force, and they were exiting their winter home in number, and occasionally going back in.
