Hover fly (Volucella bombylans)

Fletcher Wildlife Garden

A very fine bumblebee mimic. The female lays her eggs in yellowjacket nests, and according to what I have read, she can release a chemical that prevents these otherwise fierce wasps, from attacking her. Photographed on Queen Anne's Lace.
