These candy-striped flowers are one of the "spring ephemerals", wildflowers that bloom early in spring before the trees leaf out. Once everything else in leaf, these plants almost vanish beneath the growth of later blooming flowers, ferns, shrubs, etc. Spring ephemerals are almost always plants of woodlands. Other such flowers are dog-tooth violet, bloodroot, many violets, and the hepaticas.
