Black and yellow argiope, female (Argiope aurantia)

This is the season for the big orb weaving spiders. Almost invisible during the day, in early morning when the webs are hung with dew, you can see how many spiders there are. Here, in this open field, I saw this female, her egg sac nearby, and two other species of orb weavers. These are large spiders with the female's body measuring up to 28mm in length and her legs adding up to another 70mm.

They're pretty, but I'd hate to walk through their web in the field! V

She's very pretty with that lovely yellow/black marking but I wouldn't like to meet her on a dark night!! Great close-up shot of this beautiful spider though Christine

She's very pretty. Does orb weaver mean the kind of webs we normally associate with spiders? V.
