Hover fly, possibly syrphus sp.

Found this little hover fly (Syphidae) in Rockcliffe Park. There are scores of hover fly species and they are, to me anyway, one of the most fascinating and diverse groups of flies (Diptera). Many are superb wasp and bee mimics, to the point where you have to look twice or thrice to make sure! Many are superior pollinators as well. And if that is not enough, many others are beneficial aphid predators. Some species lay their eggs in aphid colonies and their larvae, when hatched, munch their way through the aphids!
