Four-spotted skimmer (Libellula quadrimaculata) with deer fly

This skimmer has just caught a large deer fly (one of a gazillion following us down the trail!) which it swooped in and plucked from in front of my face, literally. In the next photo you can see a close-up of the skimmer's mouth finishing off the fly. At this time of year, the lovely golden colour of this species fades to a nondescript brown.

Taken in Larose Forest.
