Robber fly (Asilidae)

This is another robber fly encountered on my walk today. This one was very, very tiny, perhaps 6 mm in length. When I stuck my camera close to get a side shot, it immediately jumped around and faced me as if to say, I DARE you! Well, in the insect world, these flies are fierce predators, whether they be small like this one, or many times this size as in the case of the Proctacanthus species. Note the 'beard' on the face. This is a very distinctive field mark of the Asilidae.

With more ''dares" like this you'll get to shoot their two big eyes, too. Good shot!
