Birch sawfly (Arge pectoralis)

Found in Larose Forest. As its name suggests, this sawfly is closely associated with birch trees. The larvae feed in aggregations on birch leaves. Although called "sawflies", these insects are actually in the Order Hymenoptera, which includes bees, wasps, and ants as well as sawflies. They aren't flies!

great closeup...it certainly resembles a fly though, perhaps explaining its common name..

You must be walking and looking for insects all the time, Christine. You find so many interesting things that we normal people just pass by. Thanks for showing us all these wonders on your fantastic pictures. Uschi (BV)
