Cobweb spider (Theridion sp.), male

I began taking more notice of, and seeking out more of, the tiny spiders that shelter low in grasses, plants and even on the ground. The cobweb spiders, the bowl-and-doily weavers, the sheet-web weavers, etc. This one is about 4 mm in size.

You can tell it is a male because of the enlarged palps (proper term, pedipalps) which are the small leg-like things coming out of the face, and which in the male have swollen tips. One guide I read said that they are held out "like little boxing gloves". Exactly!

I have my ruler here. I am sure that few people can accomplish a detailed shot of a 4mm spider,, showing its boxing gloves and the transparency of its legs, handheld to boot. An admirable pursuit and who wouldn't love to see what the bowl and doily weaves. Brilliant!! VVV
