Willow pinecone gall (Rabdophaga strobiloides)

This is yet another type of gall frequently found on willows. This one is caused by another Rabdophaga gall midge. There are several types of willow "cone" galls caused by different species of the midge. Another interesting gall, also causing a terminal growth on willows, looks like a cluster of dead brown leaves in winter (when it is most noticeable).
