Virginian tiger moth caterpillar (Spilosoma virginica), #8137

Taken in the Arboretum. This species is also known as "Yellow Bear", to distinguish it from the more familiar "Woolly Bear". This caterpillar is upside down. His head is at the bottom, and he was chowing down on the vegetation. Colour is variable.

A lovely image, Christine. I haven't seen any yet this year. However, I did come across a Woolly Bear in my backyard recently! V
