Smooth green snake (Opheodrys vernalis)

Marlborough Forest. I've had relatively good luck finding this species here. Last year I had one cross the trail in front of me, and a few years previous, saw one in almost the same place. The one today was in a different location, but also on the trail. Which was lucky for me, because off trail I would never have seen it. When this one moved onto the verge he disappeared completely. They are relatively common snakes, but they are well camouflaged and vanish amidst the green vegetation. They are also somewhat arboreal too and will climb into shrubs and trees which is another reason they are seldom seen. Except with a bit of luck. No make that a lot of luck!
