A stash of walnuts, stored and eaten by a Red Squirrel

Red squirrels will stash large quantities of walnuts and butternuts in the fall, to tide them over the coming winter. All winter long they will dig out walnuts and eat them. At the Fletcher Wildlife Garden, where this was taken, there are lots of walnut trees, courtesy of the red squirrels who "plant" them for us. The sound of reds gnawing on walnuts is a very familiar sound to anyone who visits the 15 acre garden.
