On the walk from the platypus pool, after I had missed out on photographing a platypus.
Another couple were following, within earshot. "Look at the sky!" she said to her husband
(who had a movie camera and had earlier got some wonderful shots of the platypus swimming).
"I want to take a photograph," she said. "No, it wouldn't be any good." he said. She had
a very expensive new digital SLR, so I turned round and offered my advice: "Use manual
settings. Focus at infinity, flash off, sensitivity up, longest exposure you can hand-
hold, lens wide open." She didn't know what I was talking about, she only knew how to use
it on "automatic." What is the name of the emotion you experience when you encounter
someone using just as a point-and-shoot a top-of-the-range camera you really covet ?
