Western Plains Zoo has managed "breeding in captivity" very successfully, but until 2009 no
baby elephants had ever been born in Australia. We were told by the elephant man that the
three females at the zoo are a bit too old to try with. "They will just be maintained," he said.
("Just maintain" is what you do with your human relatives when they get too old to breed from.)
