The island was connected to the mainland just a few years ago, by a rock arch like the one
remaining, and was called London Bridge. Then on January 15, 1990, the arch collapsed, leaving
two walkers on what had then become an island needing to be rescued by helicopter. There was
plenty of news coverage at the time, but the explanatory signs at the lookout don't mention it.
