This is a timid young Kingfisher who ventures away from it's parents every day to sit on the birdbath.
Yesterday I posted a photo of an ants nest on the trunk of a tree. It is in here that the adult Kingfishers make their nest. They use their beaks to open up the ant nest & it is in here they lay their eggs. Life between them & the ants is harmonious. The ants do the housework by keeping the nest clean for the Kingfishers. Once the birds leave, the ants then seal up the hole once again.
Here is yesterdays visit

Great. I have never seen a little kingfisher before. Nice to know the harmony in nature as well.

Oh, how envious I am of your weather and the greenery, I have never seen a kingfisher in the wild, what a beautiful yard you have.

I see belted kingfishers sitting in the wires above the drainage ditches beside the roads here; never see them in a more "aesthetic" setting.... thanks for the information on the mutually beneficial relationship of the ants and the kingfishers.

Cute little fellow; he does seem to be a little hesitant -- wondering what that woman over there keeps pointing at him. Ah, well...he'll get used to it! Neat shot.

What a little cutie! Gosh, your trees are making a magnificent recovery from the
drought of the past couple of years!
