Brisbane~Bert Hinkler

On February 7, 1928, Australian Bert Hinkler took off from London in a two-seat Avro 581E Avian biplane on the first leg of his solo flight from England to Australia. The unassuming Hinkler's grueling flight was little noted by the press until he reached India, then the world press got caught up in the drama of another "Lone Eagle" performance so soon after Charles A. Lindbergh's transatlantic flight.

It takes long enough now if you're in cattle class. It is beyond imagining to try and think what it must have been like for him.

A fine history trip. I think you need to be crazy enough and believe that everything is possible, to be a pioneer.

One has to wonder at their courage or their insanity.

These pioneers proved long flights were possible. Love this model and how it's hanging from the ceiling as if flying. Great tones and detail. V.

Surely not in that tiny thing! How amazing!
Colin Storey27-May-2012 06:41
Very brave person to do that in such a fragile looking plane.

Great bit of history.

Hard to imagine flying around in such a flimsy piece of machinery. Could hardly be stronger than a model airplane. Very nice shot with the sepia toning. I do know where this one is!!
