If you look carefully, you can see that the engineer has the door of his cabin halfway open in the front carriage, and has positioned himself to look through the window in the door at the entire train behind him.

I was told that there was a person in the last cabin of the train in a similar position looking towards the front of the train. It seems like the two people were passing signals to each other while the train was traversing this curve.
