Karen, this picture and your comments brings tears to my eyes. My family roots are in WV. Since I learned about the "topping off" of mountains in WV and KY, which utterly destroys EVERYTHING, as is being done in many places now, I have been praying that our Almighty Creator would "not allow the mountains to be moved; that the mountains could stand strong againt such rapists." The government and leadership across the board must take notice and seek wise solutions. May it be so quickly. Thank you for your journalistic eye.

Nice ironic tone to the photo.

Love your photo and commentary. It's the same with any resource isn't it? There are people who can't see the forest for the trees--all they see is board-feet. None of us usually contemplate the true costs of things we take for granted. Until we're forced to see.

Well... I agree with the surcharge for screwing up the habitat. Lots of poor people rely on the power produced by coal. How should they pay? The folks who are supposed to be enforcing mining regulations (for example, the fresh air system that sucked oxygen into the mine that was on fire was illegal) are the ones who need ... hmmm....a public thrashing? Fines don't work.

Between the coal and the oil and gas of Louisiana I think it is time this nation gets off its behind and help the people who are producing these products. Whatever happened to that pledge, "one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all." Sorry for the soapbox but somewhere, someone has dropped the ball on people.
Now, I will hum John Denver's song all day.
Guest 02-Feb-2006 14:12
I loved that old song. I used to sing along with John Denver on the radio.
I hope some day that WV will be able to make the transition to some other economy.
