Granny's Washer

West Virginia

This is the way they used to wash clothes. No spin cycle. You had to dry them by putting them through the wringer on the top.

I feel like I'm 3 years old because I have no memories of this, I'll let everyone else give their age away, thank YOU very much :)

I am dating myself Karen, but I have not-so-fond memories of these contraptions and having my fingers between those rollers.... very, very painful. Thank you, I guess... :-)

I used one of these up until 2001.... worked great for the really dirty work clothes of my kiddos and for felting/fulling wool....my ma used to haul us in from the muddy driveway and take off our muddy clothes and give us a bath in the washer (agitator off, of course!) and then throw the dirty clothes in and .... well, it was pretty efficient!

Great capture, it looks as if it might still work.

You know, this brings back a memory of my mom having a machine much like this when I was very young. But then, naa, that machine looks too old. LOL.

I remember that! And the 'dolly tub' pre machine days!

Great photo Karen. I remeber my Mom had a wringer washer and you put clothes through by hand and there were always horror stories around about ladies catching their hair and getting pulled right through!

I remember my grandmother still using hers to wash clothes too dirty for the good washing machine.

I've had a few fingers get squashed as a kid. Nice shot
