Thanks for the comment but I was using the Sony HVL 32X external flash, which only syncs at 1/50 second. You cannot change the shutter speed and use this flash on this camera. My other shots using exact same settings came out in focus, as shown on this page. I disagree that a faster shutter speed would have changed anything. The camera simply doesn't focus in dim light when you need to get the shot. I have since returned it.

The background is in focus though. I think it's your error. You need to increase the speed. You shot at only 1/50s of course it's blurry. Try 1/250s and you will notice faster focusing.
