Dead Leaves by jono slack Fifth Place

Bier Lane

This year the oak trees have only just dropped their leaves - I loved the varying colour in these, and the strange blue tracery on the right hand leaf.

Hi Warren, the infatuation is over, I've successfully resisted its siren song. I'm sticking to the 14nx for now and waiting to see what Olympus has up its sleeve.

Very strange & different colors indeed Jon. Crisp as can be! - Albert

After looking at the original, which Jono kindly showed me, I think that what I perceive as blurriness and icky texture is caused by in-camera noise reduction and aggravated by some over-zealous sharpening in post-processing. But any sharpening at all (I tried several methods) increases the ickiness. So I do blame it on the camera. - Warren

Hi Flick
Well, Nikon really have worked hard on this one - it has the options of the D2x (with better menus and controls), without suffering much from the reduction in mp. IMHO the colours are better than the D2x, the focusing is not quite as fast, but seems to me to be more reliable. It's bigger than the E1, but not much - the build quality is not quite as convincing - but nearly. I've found that you can shoot up to 640 ISO without any obvious reduction in image quality. Albert has one too - it's certainly a great deal for the money.
Worth consideration I'd say (I've been talking to Adam too - he is also convinced) jono

Thanks, yes, went out today for the first time for a week (other than staggering round to Rosie and Alan's over christmas).
I'm following the comments here on your new camera with interest, as I've been half persuaded (mostly by Adam) to sell the 14nx and buy the D200.
Part of me doesn't want to relinquish full frame, since i like exploiting shallow DOF.
However, I would love cleaner images at higher ISO, or even in shadow areas at ISO 160 (which i don't always get). I'd also like something with more MP than the E1, but which doesn't break my back to carry - along with good metering and AF.
The above are concerns for me, having seen the tight criteria Alamy have for stock pics - the thought of them viewing at 100% makes me quake.
Not that I'd ditch the E1 - just need a relaible stock camera.

HI Flick
I don't think he was teasing - I think it was the 'unnatural' that was bugging him.
Hope you're better now. Jono

He was teasing you, wasn't he? It's hyper sharp, so much so it looks unnatural on my monitor.

HI Warren - I've been thinking about your remarks very hard (always listen to what you have to say). I have a large print of this, and it certainly isn't blurry - on the other hand I do agree with you about the out of focus area - I've been fiddling with the 50mm recently, and I think it has a nasty bokeh - nothing wrong with the camera - and if you won't allow the lens to take the blame, then you'd better blame me!
I might remove it, or try again, but I'll leave it for the time being - I like the colours!
kind regards jono

I'm puzzled. If the image quality of the camera is splendid, why is this photo so blurry? Actually, it's worse than blurry. It has an irritating texture that reminds me of the sound of fingernails on a blackboard. Not at all the sort of thing I expect from Jono. - Warren

Hi Flick and Warren.
It's an interesting toy - a little larger and heavier than the E1, but not much.
build is great (but not quite as great as the E1)
Handling and image quality are splendid.
They've got it right I think. kind regards jono

So this is the new toy. Very impressive!
Adam phoned me last night, very enthused, to persuade me to sell the Kodak and buy one of these with the money. I'm seriously considering it.
Flick.

This would have been lovely if you had taken it with a good camera. - Warren
