大三巴牌坊是天主之母教堂(即聖保祿教堂)正面前壁的遺址.
聖保祿教堂附屬於聖保祿學院,於1594 年成立,是遠東地區第一所西式大學,1762年結束.
1835年一場大火燒毀了聖保祿學院及教堂,僅剩下教堂的正面前壁.
因教堂前壁貌似中國傳統牌坊,於是稱為"大三巴牌坊".
