Amicalola Falls is in Dawsonville located in Dawson County Georgia. There is a $3 parking fee and the falls can be seen from the parking area. For best viewing you need to climb 175 steps to the first landing which gives excellent views close up. If you want to walk to the top it is another 475 steps, or you can drive to the upper parking area. There are many places along the walk up to take various pictures from different angles. This falls is some 700+ feet tall and is breathe taking to see. This is a popular tourist spot so if you want to avoid crowds go during off-peak times. As with many viewing areas it is platforms and a bridge so heavy foot traffic wrecks havoc causing vibrations with trying to get decent timed exposures. As for best times to go it depends on what you want to accomplish. For best exposures overcast provides the best lighting since parts of the falls are almsot always in the shade, thus you don't have to worry about unbalanced exposures. If you want all shade then early morning is best since by 10:30-11:00 the top part is in the bright sun, otherwise wait until after 2-3pm and you can get most of the falls in the sunlight.

Take Ga. 400 to Ga. 53 towards Dawsonville. Turn right on Elliott Family Parkway (Hwy 183), and continue on Hwy 183 until it ends at GA-52. Turn right on GA-52, the entrance to the park is on the left about 1 mile past Burt's Pumpkin Farm on the left.
