Nindawayma

The Nindawayma was built in Spain in 1976, and had a number of names before being sold to the Province of Ontario in 1989, and was renamed Nindawayma. The Nindawayma ran the Tobermory-South Baymouth run until 1992, when it was replaced by the Chi-Cheemaun. She is now sitting in the Old Port of Montreal just rusting away; there were plans to turn her into a cruise ship for a company based in England but those fell through. Thanks to Matt for the update on the Nindawayma.

Originally built in Spain in 1976, the Nindawayma passed through several hands before being purchased by the company in 1989. Carrying more passengers and vehicles than the Chi-Cheemaun, the Nindawayma also did the passenger ferry run between Tobermory and South Baymouth before being retired. The ship sat in Owen Sound Harbour for seven years until 2000 when it was bought and transported to Quebec

(365 ft.)

Stretching 365 feet in length at a weight of nearly 7,000 tons, the Chi-Cheemaun is the largest ship of its kind on the Great Lakes. In operation since 1974, the Chi-Cheemaun, meaning ‘Big Canoe’, can carry 143 cars and 638 passengers between Tobermory and South Baymouth. The ferry can make the 30-mile trip in less than two hours at an average speed of 18 miles per hour.

I was born and raised in Tobermory, i have relocated but lived there during her time there, The locals took the N of the front of her name and put it on the end (INDAWAYMAN) cause she was always having problems at that time and causing delays

She was not replaced by the Cheech. She was brought across the Atlantic to work alongside the Che Cheemaun during a period of heavey traffic that lasted several years. The Cheech was there first, and built specifically for the Highway 6 run she is still there.

I sit in Owen Sound today, having just learned the return date for the Chi-Cheemaun-Nindawayma's sister-for the winter. After these years, it still doesn't seem right to not see the Nindawayma across the harbour as well. I miss the ole girl. Rusty or not, it's sad it isn't still here. An Owen Sound landmark is long gone. It's nice to know there are still people out there enjoying her still.

I remember the Nindawayma when i was younger been on it a few times. I hope some one buys it up. Puts it to work again its not that old, I was wondering where it went to thanks for the web site now i know..

I toured the inside of the Nindawayma August 29th 2007 and got an exclusive look at the interior as well as photos of the ship. I did a short news item of the adventure and posted it and the photos on Soonews.ca under the title "Inside the Nindawayma Exclusive Look". However, it is now archived and unavailable. It was an eerie tour being all alone in such a large ship, but the interior is still in quite good shape. If you would like to see the photos, drop me a line. Bob Stares

Saw the Nindawayma being towed yesterday (Aug. 6, 2007) up the Detroit River past the Renaissance Center.

Parts of the drive line (like the engines, gearboxes, propellers)from this ship have been removed, are being refurbished and sent to China, for installation into a new tug, which will come back to work on the Great Lakes.

Update on the Nindawayma she is now sitting in St. Catherines by the locks just rusting away and looking like she just got back from war. I have pics if anyone would like so see.

I`m writing a history of former ferries/passengerships which has sailed on the westcoast of Norway, and "Nindawayma" operated out of Stavanger in the late eighties.
If someone, reading this note, has information of her pre-history before starting up in Norway, and her late history after leaving Norway for Canada in 1989, I`ll be happy to know!
I`m looking for datums for when she left the yard in 1976, in which periods she has been operating different routes, datums for sale, laid up, ant not at least: whats the present situation for the ferry?

Sad to see this old lady up for sale, I worked on her during the summer's of 1981. 82 and 83 when she sailed under the Sealink colours on the Isle of Man/Heysham (UK) routes, then she was known as the Manx Viking.
