Prison in New York is the only place where you see racism, police brutality, corruption, shootings, stabbings, and a host of traumatizing incidents right in your face. And very little is done to stop it.

I lived in attica for about one year it is the one of the best maxs I was in!!!! I got my ged ,building maint cert. it is a good place to do your bid not like Comstock where the staff ulmost killed me!!!!!

Hi.I know it's 2011 now, but I will make a comment anyways.I have a friend at Attica.He tells me many things about the place,staff attitude problems towards inmates and visitors and other things.One time i called to ask about something and this person didn't sound he was having a great day.Hopefuly they will release my friend soon as possible.Anything can happen in that place.One positive thing i can say is, that mail service is fantastic.They always register the money i send my friend,small or big amount.Thanks.I wish it was possible for inmates to recieve more than 2 packages a year.So many silly rules,just to have rules, many of them makes no sence. Atleast they have long visiting hours compared to othr places where you have one hour and you sit behind a glas screen. No touching. Think about how it most be not to be touch for 25 years or for the rest of your life.Its inhumane.Its just not gods way or will. Never has been never will be. Is there someone who would tell me about, how much change we are allowed to bring and how much it is for a picture ? Thanks

last of the prisons built as a prison. too bad it's not ran like it was in 1971. inmates leave attica and go out back to wyoming correctional facility (medium) and want to go back to attica! that's the truth, i've worked at both places.

my brother has been in attica for 9 months his release date is in 17 days january 5 he has told me it is the best place to serve ur time if you are ready to serve your time and arent mentally soft

Hi; My man was just transferred to Attica from another facility in New York. He says he doesn't know why. I need to have some idea. He told me it is a horrible environment. I am concerned. What facilitates a transfer? His time is up 2016. I need to know how /if I need to step up the mental support for him. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I have worked at Attica for 18 years. A place is the sum of its parts, its people and its expereinces. The place is not as bad as some say here or as good as others say. It houses a lot of extremely bad people who you do not want on the other side of that big wall, living on your street. You don't get State jail time for your first minor offense and you don't get sent to a Maximum security facily like ATTica for your good behavior. The citizens of New York spend roughly $30K a year to keep an inmate there, but it is certainly not a happy place. Living there or working there eats away at you over time and your attitudes changes, not in a good way. when you spend your time living or working with the very dregs of society it upsets your own moral balance.

My name is Onan. I was considered a security threat at all the mediums across the state. If I had to choose a medium or Attica ,I would choose the latter. There is a level of respect at "the big house" that is seldom found anywhere else; not even on the streets Will you find the kind of camraderie, and aversion to trivialities as you will here. You just don't get a ticket here for breathing loudly as you would at a medium. Now , I've been to the kitchens of many restaurants and I have to say few if none can compare to the level of clealiness of Attica's . You want to talk about "locally grown"? These yuppies should take a lesson from NYDOCS! I wish inmates who worked the kitchens can apply their experiences learned towards BOH so when that day comes it can be on their trench wide resume gap.

Maybe if YOU took responsibility of your actions you wouldnt end up in prison. And another thing, why is it that I work 2 full time jobs, pay out of my ass to go to the dentist, but a child molester, murderer, drug dealer, thief can go for free?

I see a lot of how bad it is to be in NYS Prison System. Just a thought then don't do anything that gets you landed there. All those complaining,did you ever wonder where the funding comes from? That would be the hard working citizens of NY you know the ones who abide by the law. The ones who pay taxes. I know for sure and some have even admitted to this that the food is not as bad as it seems not to mention 1)its free 2) you never eat leftovers because that is inhumane. Please give me a break. Lets not forget the cable channels you actually do get and movie nights. Top Choice Healthcare, free. Education (college degrees). Not too mention the bogus lawsuits you file against CO's because you know the state just settles them. You make those that work there sound out to be mean and ruthless, and I am sure you are all Saints and don't deserve to be there. Seriously, you want me to fee sorry for you. I don't think so. If you didn't belong there you wouldn't be there. Feel your Rights have been violated well think of your Victims Rights... I will admit I know quite a few within the system, they know they are in there for a reason, they do their time, stay out of trouble and accept what is, is. I suggest all you complainers do the same.

I am the wife of an inmate serving 25 to life right here in the Attica Correctional Facility. We have been married 10 years this Oct. 2009 an I have seen a lot of things in this prison, not all good but certainly not all bad. Listen ppl, this isnt somewhere you want to land up in, however, I have heard the stories of other facilities an Attica, seems to be the better of what I have heard. CO's are human beings not machines, yes some can be cruel, but I have met alot that are no different than you or I. If treated with respect they treat you the same way. My husband is in Honor block that is part of D block and fairs pretty well there. He is respected by other inmates and CO's alike. He has a good job where he works around civilians and capt. luit. and sarg. He is hard working and treated as such. I have never been treated unjust in the 10 years I've been going up there. However, keep in mind ppl this is a Max A security prison its not disney world. If you have respect for it, it will in turn have respect for you. Yes CO's can be jerks, but so can inmates and there visitors.

Why can't I find out any information about the three inmates that were killed by other inmates at the start of the riot?? What happened to those men along with Officer Quinn. Did there murders men anything were they white, black, spanish and why were they killed.

i just visited there today for a class field trip and it was the best thing i ever did in my life. the outside of the jail looks like i castle, we didnt think it was a prison from the bus until we pulled in and saw the word ATTICA CORRECTIONAL FACILITY above the door. i learned so much from the people i met and they were the nicest people ever. i was intimidated as soon as i walked into the jail but as soon as the prisoners sat down, including adam roberts, i was fine. they were not scary at all. they made my class laugh so much and i would definetly go back again if i had the chance.

You have to be kidding me, these inmates that complain about mistreatment are most of the time false. If only you could see how this place runs you would turned to your friend and ask why he is lieing to you. They lie to recieve pitty. They want people to feel bad for them because they are in Jail. They want you to feel bad so you will give them money or packages or be there for them on the phone. The have free health care, more nurses than our schools do, free cable tv, free food (which is not that bad).Heck they even order out for pizza and wings!! But you will never see it, and you will only hear stories that make you feel bad about them. They choose to go there, don't do the crime if you can't do the time!!

This is a reply to MISSY. If you are doing a paper on the Attica riot you should read The New York State Commision on Attica Report, also known as the McKay Commission. It is a publication by the State of New York and you should be able to find it in your local library. It is an exhaustive, lengthy report on what happened. You can also read the testimony transcripts online. If you want an inmate perspective, you should read the book by Richard X. Clark, who was an inmate at the time. The book is called The Brothers of Attica if I recall correctly.

Plus out father served 3 years their had had been attacked several times so there is another reason for worring. As a former inmate of this hell hole I wish A&E would call me for one of their Lock Up episodes for an after they are released interveiw. maybe then the public can see that even after you do your time the parole supervision is almost as bad as being inside.

In Sept. of 1968, my uncle died in attica while he was an inmate. The wardon claimed that he had a heart attack while playing football, But witness accounts claimed he didnt play that day due to a leg injury. My mother pulled his collar down in the casket, and noticed a cut on his throat. After my grandfather yelled at the wardon on the phone, and told him he was gonna have another autopsy performed,, his body was shipped back home,, without the internal organs.. I've searched all over for any records on my uncle, but cant find any. His name is Thomas Eugene Crown,, and he was 27 when he died in 1968. I was one of the National Guard members who wittnessed the assault as it started (as the chopper was dropping tear gas) I was able to see the aftermath,the gore and horror it presented. I will never forget the sight of TIME SQUARE (on the roof)splattered in red. I also saw the castration of one of the prisoners by another prisoner. The only time in by life I was unable to sleep at night after the riot. Thanks for the photos, they brought back many many memories. Thanks again.

i assure you attica is far from soft.the only softness in the place is the fact that the state makes the stay for them somewhat comfortable.meaning:the hot meals,the free bed,the free medical,the free cable t.v,a store in which it costs less to buy things then a grocery store.free education.in some other facilities they even have college classes.some families cant afford to put their kids through school,unless they get locked up.over $35,000 dollars a year per inmate to house them.as for the inmates,they get as much respect as they give.simple as that.know the rules and follow them and you are fine.ive heard of grown men crying as they walk into tne draft in building of attica.they state they`re in hell.no,but its close.the staff at attica are without a doubt the best,most professional and tightest group of family the state will ever employ.if the public only knew what they had to endure everyday at work,they would have whole new respect for the job.i love the old time photos.uve done an outstanding job.alot has changed since the photos.good luck to those who have gotten out.please dont come back to the system.

I dont know they do it? Some are ther for 4 yrs, some for 40 and more. I guess like a gold fish if you put it in a little bowl it wont grow, put it in a big bowl it gets bigger. I guess you just have to adapt to your surroundings.

I was in Attica for 8 years. Just got out. Most things posted are true. Attica is getting soft. There are 22 stations. From Buffalo, Rochester and New York City. Inmates pay for these stations out of a general fund from the Vending Machines and family picnics. The food is not from a resturant but it is far better than any Soup Kitchen. Only kitchen workers get up at six. Everyone else stands for the 7am count. The hacks treat you with respect if you give it to them. Wanna be a gansta? The gang in blue is 20,000 strong - they always win. Knuckle-heads get treated like knuckle-heads. Men get treated like men. My meds inside were free and brought to my gate or I went to the square. Now on the street they want over four grand a month. With health insurance now I pay 175 a month in co-pays.

Hello, My name is Drew and out of 12 yrs in "the system" I was housed IN attica as a resident for a total of 3yrs and out of all of NY states prison's Attica is the ONLY prison I would RATHER BE IN. WHY? because the cops treat you with respect as long as you do the same. the officers and Hall Capt.'s are 99.9% GOOD People and even though it's a Prison max A ... it is where I would MUCH rather be than even in a Medium or Minimum class prison. my old cell I Maxed out of is D-37_15 thats "D" block,37 Company,15 cell on the flats, I worked in Vocational. NEVER going back to Prison either.

My counselor took us for our Senior year of HS. He persuaded us to bring some food for the inmates, the ones that were going to be our liasons. I brought a whopper for myself, and one for the inmate. His name was Bobo. He also was in the riots. He was enthusiastic about this thing we called a "whopper". He had never heard of nor had one before. He was so excited to be able to tell the others of this food. They were polite to us, but advised us that had we been for real reasons, we would have been theres for the taking.We were introduced to the actual cells, with actual inmates in them. One inmate was 7 ft. tall. He made our friend Eric, the tallest guy in our class, look like a dwarf. The reason our counselor brought us there was for a sort of "scared straight" program.It worked...I joined the Marines soon after and now am a successful CP analyst for Verizon Wireless.

I was at Attica for over a year of a six year bid. Not 22 stations on TV but three, For the benifit of the CO's not the inmates. Keeps them in there cells. No meds delivered to your gate. Gotta get up at 6am and go to the infirmery. Gotta get a pass days ahead of time. The food sucks about as bad as it can get. People who don't get packages generally starve to death over the years. saw about 30 people get stabbed in my year there. Every day is survival. Anyone who thinks this is some fun liberal happy home is high on drugs or just plain ignorant. It's an awful place full of sadness and misery. Most people there come back to society worse for there expierience. Those that are lucky enough to make it out. Only a fool would think this place was cool or soft.

My brother is in this place I call hell. Believe me this is no place for anyone that you care about. There are a select few CO's that have any respect for the inmates there but most do not. There are inmates in Attica that have made one mistake to land them there, and they are treated just like repeat offenders. Most of the CO's have terrible mean streaks..I wonder if they treat their family members the same way? I will be glad when I never have to see this place again!

13" TV. 22 Cable stations. Three meals a day. Paid everyday that you are there. Go to the store every other week and pay half of what you do on the streets. No bills. Someone else does your laundry, dishes and cooks for you. Every name brand medication you request delivered right to your gate for free. Free gym membership. Free school. Free clothes. Free dental. Free Doctor Visits. No Co-Pays at all. Can go outside for up to five hours a day. Can call home every night collect. And an administration that walks around asking how you are doing today? Better than a great deal of other lifestyle in America today. I hope liberals continue to run this great state and provide for us this great Attica Correctional Facilty. ATTICA STATE PRISON IS LONG GONE...

All you visitors complaining about the guards treating you like prisoners need to understand that the number one way contraband is introduced to the facility is visitors and they must be strict to EVERYBODY in order to maintain the safety and security of the prison.

I was in "the big house" for a year. Contrary to its infamy,it wasn't that bad-for a prison-that is! So long as one keeps himself out of everyone else's business , he'll be fine . Attica was the only prison that I did not receive an annoying infraction,the Cos demand respect and they give it in return.If you walk around acting as if you're a killer ,believe me,they will deliver a major hurting. After I left Attica for Oneida and then Mohawk the respect and professionalism exhibited by Attica's officers was missing and for a moment I yearned to go back behind the wall to avert further complications within the department

Hello, Though I've never been able to visit my uncle in Attica, because I live in a different state, I know from watching different documentaries that it is not a good place to be. My uncle is currently serving a 7 year sentence for a crime I know in my heart he DID NOT commit. He will be coming home in 4 months and his family and I can't wait. Thank you for letting me be able to see what Attica is like from the inside. Although the pictures give me a beter idea of where my uncle spends his time, it makes me more scared and worried for him.

my boyfriend is in attic at this very moment and he has been in several differnt ones over the state, he said that attica is by far the worst that he has ever been in. i was their years back visting a friend and well i sat in front of it and watched the sun rise.........my god it was scarrey!

Hi everyone! I'm from Attica, I'm 19 I've been inside the prison twice, and it is very different from what you expect. Every senior at my high school has the chance to take a small tour and talk to inmates at the prison for our participation in government class. It was an amazing experience that I'll never for get. If you think looking at these pictures are intimidating, once you are inside the intimidation grows ten times. I have a lot of respect for all the people working inside the prison, not only as my friend's parents but as individuals. This pictures are very good and help you see what it is like inside such a high security prison.

I'm from the Netherlands/Europe and on one of the TV channels they show the Couthouse serial "Law and Order" in this series the DA Jack Mc Coy, threatens some accused with spending the rest of their lives in Attica. So I knew it was a prison. But only now I understand what he means by those words. Lookin' at the pics this is a place no one should wish to go there. Furthermore until now I thought it was not far from NYC but lookin' at a US Roadmap it's a hell of a way from The Big Apple.

Hi Karl, I enjoyed your gallery very much. I read all the comments and I must say I was not surprised. I retired from the Federal Prison System after 27 1/2 years. The people that made the negative remarks should remember you get good and bad officers at every prison. Most will treat you with the same respect as you treat them. They have no idea how much pressure they are under every day. We use to say that any day you walked out the front door at the end of your shift was a good day. A bad day is when you are carried out on an ambulance strecheer, I know from experiance. Thanks again for the tour.

I visit mmy brother every so often and every time I go up there I always get this sick feeling in my stomach. But it is okay I guest because it is my brother that is up there doing the time at lease I can do is visit him. The place is very scary because it do house some very bad men in there. And some time I am scared for my brother because he is not a bad man just made a wrong turn.. But thank you for letting me see more of the place. I have a differnt look on it now. Not that much but some.

I went on a tour of Attica today with the RIT Criminal Justice Student Association. These pictures are probably as close as most of you probably want to get - it is not a happy place. I can't speak for the inmates, or staff, only as an outsider who went on a 3 hour tour. I can tell you this - it isn't fun, it isn't "cool", it is a prison. It is a warehouse of people who have a hard time behaving in PRISON. The interior pictures on this site are very good - they capture the dark, depressing mood of this facility better than I ever thought a picture could. Nice job.

I visit a friend of mine every month. I agree that i've also had mixed experiences with the CO's there. However, i keep in mind that it's not their job to make the experience "pleasant" for me. I am there for a reason. It's not a vacation. My friend that is serving time there says its decent considering it's prison and doesn't want to be transfered out. Only 4 more years to go

My brother is serving time in Attica. He also says it is the best prison he has been in and he has requested to stay there for his entire time, to not be transferred anywhere else. My experience with the gaurds is mixed. Some of them are nice and others treat people like dirt. I think working in the system might tend to harden some hearts. My Uncle, has 60 acers in Attica, when I was a kid, my cousin would take me out to the farm in Attica. We'd pass by that old prison, it looked like a castle from the outside. I like Attica{the Town}. I got my first deer there.....now residing in PHX AZ

i was in attica for a few lonely years and let me tell you there was nothing cool about it. stop watching so many movies! or you can go out and kill someone and see just how cool attica can be.

My soon to be x-husbands father was in the attica riots. he was a prison guard. his uncle has recently retired from there. i have heard many stories of this place. big flippin deal. treat people with respect.

This is an amazing photographic account of Attica. My fiance spent 2 years here, and the stories he tells me are sickening. Attica is a horrible, dirty, disgusting place, and that experience will forever change him.

my brother, Michael Pavone, spent almost a year here from 2005-2006-doing 25 to life for 2nd degree murder. He died on 3/21/06 in a prison hospital near the Wende Correctional Facility of liver failure. What a terrible looking place-the word "dungeon" comes to mind.

In 1963, as part of the boys choir from St Mary's HS in Lancaster NY... I sang Easter Services at Attica Prison in a huge hall... Under the Direction of Frater Loren... It made an impression on me... As an RN in Alameda County CA 1977 I was the nite nurse in jail in the County Hospital... I kept a cannibal company for half a year... Stay out of this system at all cost...

My brother was an inmate at Attica for 4 years, from 89 to 92. He said it was the best years of the time that he did. They treated him better than they treated us as visitors. Total disrespect. We did not know what to expect, what to do. Just because we love our family members does not mean the CO's have a right to treat US as if we are the ones doing the time.

hello i went to that place to visit and it was a really nice place for inmates but i am 15,the guards treated me like i belonged their shoving me and telling me to move i was knocked into the mud but it was worth seeing my father havent seen him for 14 years.

I was right next to Attica in Wyoming Correctional and right outside Attica's wall in the annex for my last four years in prison. I must say it was some experience. My wife was a CO in Green Haven. I used to work inside and outside Attica Prison. I got out of prison over foour years ago and am now becoming a prison chaplain.

We went to see a steam show that was fascinating to a couple of teenagers, what with tractors, trucks & even a locomotive we could clamber on. On the way back to Amherst, we stopped in Attica for a bite to eat. There was a glass jar by the register for those wishing to contribute to the families of stricken guards. When we passed the prison, the lawn was littered with all the waste from the media & others. It was such an eerie feeling looking at the ominous front of the building and knowing what had gone on inside just the day before. We were quiet for the rest of our trip.

I lived in Attica, New York while my husband was an inmate. Out of all the prisons in New York State Attica was the best for an inmate to be housed in. I will inform you that the prison gaurds that lived in Attica, whom were my neighbors, treated me with disrespect. Shoving shopping carts into the back of my legs while my 2year old daughter was sitting in the basket. Attica was a town.

the irony is the prison is located in such a beautiful area. This has got to eat at the people inside. Attica has the typical overwhemming entry way, made intenionaly to make the inmate feel small.

Drove past this place in 2002 while on my way from Lockport to Letchworth State Park, on a road trip that started and ended near Seattle. All I could think of when I drove by was "So that's the place where the awful riot took place years ago." Thanks for the inside look.
