Hillsville man killed in moped accident

A Hillsville man was killed at the scene of an accident in Hillsville on Monday when his moped struck a logging truck.
According to Virginia State Police Senior Trooper R.B. Phipps, the accident occurred at approximately 11:50 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 52 and Route 906 (Kinglet Lane), about a half-mile south of Sunny Side Store. Phipps said a witness and the driver of the logging truck both had the same account of the accident.
According to Phipps, witnesses said Aubrey Lee Matney, 53, of Hillsville, was driving a moped on the right side of the southbound lane of U.S. 52 when a 1998 International logging truck driven by Andrew Belford Lawson, 67, of Hillsville went to pass the moped.
“The witness said the same thing as the log truck driver. The log truck went to pass the moped in a passing lane and it looked like the moped was going to turn on Route 906 when it turned into the log truck’s right rear,” Phipps said. “Whether alcohol was related, we don’t know.”
Matney was pronounced dead at the scene. An accident reconstruction team was on the scene working the accident, which Phipps said is under investigation. He added that Matney was transported to Twin County Regional Hospital and that the services of a medical examiner would be sought.
Virginia State Police 1st Sgt. Mike Musser was also on the scene with the accident reconstruction team.
“To me this is an example of why legislation needs to be enacted that limits mopeds to operation on highways of speed limits of 35 miles per hour or less,” Musser said. “They tried to introduce that a few years ago and it failed.”
