This is a good look at the pale spot on her crown, a distinquishing field mark for our adult female, Spike, during the breeding season. We don't know how she acquired the spot. It disappeared with her post-breeding molt, and her crown was solid brown when she returned to the nesting territory for a visit in the fall.
