Liu Man Shek Tong Ancestral Hall

It is the ancestral hall of Liu clan. The name of Liu Man Shek Tong is quiet interesting. The literally meaning of Tong is “hall”. What is the meaning of “man’ and “shek”? In ancient China, the salary of officials were calculated by grains. “Shek” is a unit of measure the weight of grains. One “shek” is equal to 120 Catties (1 Catty = 605 grams or 1.33 lbs). It is believed that a distant ancestor Mr. Liu Kong and his four sons were served in Sung Dynasty (960 - 1279) as senior officials, the salary of each of them was two thousand ‘sheks”. Therefore, the whole family earned ten thousand “sheks” annually. In order to commemorate their famous ancestors, it is called Liu Man Shek Tong.

Originally, the ancestors of Liu clan were lived in Fujian. They migrated to Guangdong in mid of Yuan Dynasty (1279 - 1368). The Liu Man Shek Tong was constructed in 1751. The style of this ancestral hall is in three halls and two courtyards. It was declared a monument in 1985. After the reinstatement works in 1985, the opening ceremony was held by Lady Pamela Youde (the wife of former governor) on 1st March, 1986.
