The church is built by a Portuguese nobleman Duarte Coelho in 1520 – 1521.
After the Dutch fought against Portuguese and occupied Melaka in 1641, this church was destroyed during the battle.
In front of the church is the statue of St. Francis Xavier. It was established in 1952 for commemorating the 400th anniversary of the visit of St. Francis Xavier to Melaka.
Look! Its right hand is lost. It was broke by a fell heavy branch from a big tree.
